The Oshkosh West Basketball Club, Inc. (OWBC) is a youth basketball organization that enables both boys and girls that are in 3rd-8th grades the opportunity to be on competitive traveling basketball teams. Teams and rosters are selected each year and are usually determined by October or sooner. Each grade has up to two teams per grade per gender.
Every year parents ask how their children can be selected to be on a team. To be
considered for a team your child must live in the Oshkosh West district and plan to attend Oshkosh West High School. Since our inception the OWBC does not hold official try outs to make a team. Players are chosen by the varsity high school staffs along with the OWBC Board of Directors. Previous and current OWBC coaches can recommend players too. Coaches are selected each year by the OWBC Board of Directors.
Players are chosen on their basketball skill level, attitude and sportsmanship. Players need to be noticed and recognized by the varsity coaching staff, OWBC Board of Directors or an OWBC coach. If a player makes a team one year he or she is not guaranteed to make a team the next year.
The best way for a player to be noticed and recognized is to attend the basketball camps and or leagues that Coach Brad Clark and Coach Niki Sutter offer during the summer. Please note that these are privately run camps and that the OWBC has no official affiliation with them, although we do support them. Other ways to be noticed or recognized are to attend, if offered, the free basketball clinics run by the varsity coaches in the fall. Other ways are for middle school students to play on their middle school teams, or to ask a coach or Board member to attend a YMCA game or ask for a private tryout. Not all requests are granted though.
The OWBC is entirely made up of volunteer Board members and coaches. There is a fee to be on a team. Most teams play about 10 week-end tournaments and they usually start in December and run through March.
