Frequently Asked Questions

The most frequently asked questions are:

Q: How are players chosen to be on an OWBC team?

A: To be considered for a team your child must plan to attend Oshkosh West High School.

Since our inception the OWBC does not hold official try outs to make a team. Players are chosen by the varsity high school staffs with possible assistance from the OWBC Board of Directors or previous and current OWBC coaches, if needed.

Players are chosen on their basketball skill level, attitude and sportsmanship.

Players need to be noticed and recognized by the varsity coaching staff, OWBC Board of Directors or an OWBC coach.

The best way for a player to be noticed and recognized is to attend the basketball camps and or leagues that Coach Brad Clark and Coach Niki Sutter offer during the summer. Please note that these are privately run camps and that the OWBC has no official affiliation with them, although we do support them. Other ways to be noticed or recognized are to attend, if offered, the free basketball clinics run by the varsity coaches in the fall. Other ways are for middle school students to play on their middle school teams, or to ask a coach or Board member to attend a YMCA game or ask for a private tryout. Not all requests are granted though.

Q: Can new players make a team if they were not previously selected?

A: Each year new teams are selected. If a player makes a team one year he or she is not guaranteed to make a team the next year. Each player still needs to be chosen to play on a team no matter how many years experience that individual has.

Q: How are coaches selected to coach a team?

A: Coaches are selected each year by the OWBC Board of Directors.

Q: Is there a cost to play on a team?

A: Yes. Each player is required to pay a player fee. There may be additional costs such as a uniform expense.

Q: How many tournaments are played each year?

A: The average number of tournaments played for each team is about 8-10.

Q: Who is in charge of the OWBC?

A: The club is run by a volunteer Board of Directors who make the decisions regarding club rules, policies and guidelines.

Q: Do you need to have played on an OWBC team to make an Oshkosh West High School basketball team.

A: No.
